  1. USING THE MICROSOFT(R) WINDOWS 3.1 UNIVERSAL
  2. PRINTER DRIVER WITH THE HP DESKJET PORTABLE PRINTER

  5. This document contains important information about 
  6. the Microsoft(R) Windows 3.1 Universal Printer Driver  
  7. that supplements the on-line "Help" utility.

  10. RELEASE NOTES
  11. =============
  12. At the time this Microsoft(R) Universal Printer Driver
  13. was released, the following limitations existed when 
  14. using the driver with the HP DeskJet Portable printer:
  15.  
  16.   Application Limitations
  17.   -----------------------      
  18.     When single sheet mode printing is employed,
  19.     a multiple page document printout may not be
  20.     syncronized with requests to "Insert Pages." The
  21.     printer will indicate when it is ready for another
  22.     page to be inserted by flashing of the printer 
  23.     online indicator.

  25.     In some applications (e.g. Word Perfect) text which 
  26.     is colored other than black and created with scalable 
  27.     fonts will not print correctly.  To avoid this
  28.     problem, format text with a black attribute.

  36.     The Microsoft Windows 3.1 Universal Printer Driver for
  37.     HP DeskJet Family Printers supports the DeskJet,
  38.     DeskJet PLUS, DeskJet 500, DeskJet 500C (black printing
  39.     only) and DeskJet Portable printers.  It provides
  40.     support for DeskJet printer fonts and Windows 3.1
  41.     TrueType scalable typefaces.  Print speed will vary
  42.     depending on the printer model and settings selected.

  45.   System Requirements
  46.   -------------------
  47.     This printer driver will work with recommended
  48.     Windows 3.1 system configurations.

  51.   To Use the Microsoft Windows 3.1 Universal Printer Driver:
  52.   ----------------------------------------------------------
  53.      -  install the driver and its support files on your
  54.         hard disk.
  55.      -  select a printer port
  56.      -  select printer settings
  57.      -  choose the default printer

  60.   Installing the Printer Driver 
  61.   -----------------------------
  62.      1.  Start Windows.
  63.      2.  Open "Main", then open the "Control Panel".
  64.      3.  Open "Printers", click "Add", and double click
  65.          "Install Unlisted or Updated Printer" in the
  66.          List of Printers box.
  67.      4.  Insert the HP DeskJet Portable Microsoft Windows
  68.          Printer Driver disk in your computer's floppy
  69.          disk drive.
  70.      5.  Make sure that the drive listed matches your
  71.          computer's floppy disk drive and click "OK".
  72.      6.  Double click "HP DeskJet Portable" in the List
  73.          of Printers box.

  75.     Selecting a Printer Port
  76.     ------------------------
  77.     When you install a printer driver, the printer is
  78.     automatically assigned to LPT1.  If your printer is
  79.     connected to a different port, you'll need to change
  80.     the selected port.

  82.      7.  Click "HP DeskJet Portable on LPT1:" in the
  83.          Installed Printers box.
  84.      8.  Click the "Connect" button.
  85.      9.  Select the correct port in the Ports list box
  86.          and click "OK".

  90.     10.  Click "HP DeskJet Portable" in the Installed
  91.          Printers box.
  92.     11.  Click the "Setup" button.  Select your printer
  93.          settings, as desired.
  94.     12.  Click "OK" to close the HP DeskJet Portable
  95.          dialog box.

  97.     Choosing the Default Printer
  98.     ----------------------------
  99.     The selected default printer is used when printing
  100.     from many Windows applications.  In Windows 3.1 you
  101.     can only have one default printer at a time.

  103.     13.  Click "HP DeskJet Portable" in the Installed
  104.          Printers box.
  105.     14.  Click the "Set As Default Printer" button.
  106.     15.  Click "Close" to close the Printers dialog box.

  108.     The Microsoft Windows 3.1 Universal Printer Driver for
  109.     DeskJet Family Printers is now installed and set up
  110.     for use with your HP DeskJet Portable printer.  For
  111.     additional information, click the "Help" buttons in the
  112.     printer setup dialog boxes.  Also, check your disk(s)
  113.     for README.TXT files.  Read these files with the
  114.     Windows Notepad accessory.

  117. NOTES FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.0 USERS
  118. =====================================    
  119. The Microsoft Windows 3.1 Universal Printer Driver for the
  120. DeskJet Family Printers was designed primarily for use with
  121. Microsoft Windows 3.1.  If you are currently using
  122. Windows 3.0, we encourage you to consider upgrading to
  123. Windows 3.1 to take full advantage of the features of your
  124. HP DeskJet Portable printer.  Although this printer driver
  125. can also be used with Windows 3.0, it will not support all
  126. printing features provided under Windows 3.1.  Scalable
  127. fonts are not supported with this printer driver under
  128. Windows 3.0.

  130. To use this printer driver with Windows 3.0, follow the
  131. instructions in your "Microsoft Windows 3.0 User's Guide"
  132. to install a printer driver not supplied by Windows using
  133. "Add Unlisted Printer".

  135.   Windows 3.0 Limitation

  137.     The Help files provided, are compatible with 
  138.     Windows 3.1.  These Help files will not work with 
  139.     Windows 3.0.
